Ivo Sbalzarini – What is complexity?

4:00 pm — 5:00 pm

MPI-CBG | Auditorium

DIPP Vision Talk

We often hear and say: “Biological systems are complex.” But what do we mean by that? What is complexity? The concept has many meanings, from lack of knowledge (epistemic complexity) to true system randomness (alleatory complexity). In mathematics and computer science, there are formal definitions of complexity. In this talk, I will review some of the inherent properties of biological systems that render them (appear?) complex, and I will discuss different concepts and definitions of complexity, bridging the disciplines.

Speaker: Ivo Sbalzarini, research group leader at the MPI-CBG
